I went to bed pretty early last night. I was just over come with the sleepies. In fact, Doug had to wake me up twice as I fell asleep on the sofa reading a book. I knew there was a wind advisory but it wasn't too bad out when I went to sleep.
As I went back to the bedroom to lay down, I saw the glow outside that usually means it's snowing but I was to tired to be curious so I just went to sleep. This morning I could barely force our front door open. There wasn't tons of snow, but it had been blown up against out door and then frozen solid. Ick. I hate the metal scratching on frozen snow sound. Like nails on a blackboard.
Then of course it was interesting trying to break into Fort Knox...aka My Car. Melting snow had welded my doors shut in the freezing temps and I finally had to ask a neighbor for help. Man muscles and all.
I scraped about 8 inches of drifted snow off the top of my car and finally was ready to go, and the road was to slick. My car couldn't get any traction. I had to end up going the long way to work. As I was about half way to work my "check gages" light came on. Crud. I had been too late after getting my car out this morning to stop for gas. I knew that I could drive about 30 miles on empty so I felt fairly okay about going out. But you know it was on my mind from then on!
The road down to work was SCAREY. All Caps. The drifts were basically acting like launching ramps for the blowing snow. So instead of ground blizzarding, it was wind-shield level blizzarding for me.
So it looked like the road had been plowed so I was thinking I was going to make it to work... Wrong. So very wrong. The snow plow had only done PART of the road and was turning around to do more of the road I had just came down instead of going further down the road.
So I had to turn around and follow him out. The snow plow even got stuck at one point and had to keep backing up and moving more snow. Guess who was right behind him. Good thing my parents taught me to never follow too closely.
As it was the snowplow gave me a few heart attacks. They back up way too fast!! I was honking my horn and backing up as fast as my little car could on the snow.
Once we got past the Snow plow it was scarey just getting back into town! I saw one car that had gone off the road sometime in the night and was completely drifted in and a truck that had attempted going on an unplowed road. People were trying to tow it out of the drift with little to no success.
Finally, Nora and I were able to make it out to work about 2 hours late. Yesh.
I am SO glad that I got the studded snow tires put on the car. I would be terrified to drive in this weather without them!

More Snow!
More Snow last night! And more on the way tonight.
If you requested that I add your blog or etsy as a link on this blog, and it hasn't happened yet, I apologize. I have been out sick with a miserable, no good, very bad head cold since Sunday. I will try and get all caught up this week.
Since I have been sick, and it has been snowing so much, Doug (my husband) has been walking the 2 miles to work and then another 2 miles home each day. Needless to say it is good exercise for him, but when I needed to use the car this morning- I was snowed in! I had to scrape a foot of snow off the windshield, the hood, the trunk and a sheet of ice off each window. Not only that, but we live on a hill and our car does not yet have it's snow tires on. So I could not get any traction going up the hill. So instead I reversed out of the parking spot and went the long way to work. I had to drive through town instead of skirting around it. Good thing I left an extra 15 minutes early. Nora wasn't too pleased with the extra long car ride, but overall it was a nice drive. Everyone was driving slow and careful which was nice to see.
I was watching the weather channel this morning since I become obsessed with weather during the winter months. I saw that the Southern States have tornado warnings! Yikes! I don't ever want to live ANYWHERE that has tornado threat. I have always been very lucky in that respect. I will take massive amounts of snow and rain anyday over tornado and hurricane concerns. Good thing I want to live in the Montana/Wyoming area then, eh?
Speaking of which, the move to Montana is becoming more and more certain everyday. I really am going to miss the Palouse. It took a few years for this area to grow on me, but now that I know more people, it will be so very hard to leave. But I feel a certain joy in my heart each time I think of being able to go see my family whenever I want to! Yay! I know the decision is a good one. Just please keep those good thoughts, prayers, whathaveyou's coming our family's way. We really are hoping that the universe has lined up good jobs so that we can be successful and get settled.
While I was sick and at home with Nora, I decided it was time to teach her a new skill. She now knows how to "High Five" though she isn't very consistent with it. She has to be in the right mood. However, teaching her how to high five has reminded her how to clap, so we are seeing a lot more of that now. So cute. I will try to get a video of it tomorrow. I just need to remember to bring the camera with me.
Not much else is going on. I am ALMOST finished with MaryJane's Christmas present. Yeah, I know- Almost a month late. I did have some people who only recently got me their patches though, and I know MJ will love it whenever I get it to her (SOON!). :D I will post a picture of it as soon as I have given it to her.
If any of you haven't ever visited MaryJanesFarm either in real life or virtually- you should! If you are reading this blog, I KNOW you will find something love over there. And MaryJane herself is as real and true to life as she seems in her magazines and books. She is petite and beautiful and completely true to herself. I was amazed when I first met her and realized she was short like me! I am 5 foot even and she is probably only an inch or two taller. For some reason, I had always thought she must be at least 5'6"! MaryJane and my mom could be sisters, they are both so kind, loving, and creative. And for those of you who know how much I love my mom- I hope that gives you an idea what MaryJane is like.
I just went and peeked in on Nora. She is sleeping in the other room. She is fast a sleep and lying about 3/4 of the way onto her side. When I laid her down, her arms sprawled out to either side and since then she has tried to roll over a little bit. One of her hands is not resting on her forehead- palm out Scarlett O'Hara fashion. I SO wish I had brought the camera out.
While I was sick I worked on making new diapers for Nora. Since she is crawling/cruising so much now, I decided to go ahead and make the next batch of diapers into contoured diapers. They are pretty easy once you have done it a time or two. I use the Mamabird diaper patter, and have been re-using the old flat fold diapers as soaker pad inserts. I am using 1/4 inch elastic and that seems to be just strong enough to hold in the solids but not so strong that it leaves marks in Nora's skin. One of these days I will take pictures as I make one in case the helps anyone else who wants to try.
Talk with you all again soon!

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
As I went to bed last night I knew it was snowing. Our bedroom was filled with a soft glow of light from outside which only happens when it is foggy or snowing out. Something about the water particulates in the air must reflect the ambient light back up and into the bedroom. It probably doesn't help that I have 4 strings of lights wrapped around railing of the stairs outside! What can I say- I love Christmas lights.
I remember as a child one of our family's Christmas traditions was to drive around the town to see all the fantastically decorated houses. We would listen to Christmas carols and sing along when we knew the words. Probably off-key. But it was lots of fun and it always seemed so magical!
This was of course before the time of huge inflatable snow globes in the front yard and most people didn't have animatronic decorations. But seeing all the houses lit up and glittering- It made Christmas be the best time of the year! I can't wait until we have our own house and we can really get into the Christmas spirit. It is hard to decorate for the holidays when you live in an apartment that doesn't let you put new holes in the wall or use the sticky stuff that holds things up. And it is especially hard to hang lights to the roof when you don't own a ladder. So our outside lights consist of a few strands wound around the railing of our stairs and some hanging around the door. I also wrapped the front door in wrapping paper and put some bows on it as well.
Anyway- Back to the snow. The world was beautiful this morning. Nice and fresh and whitewashed. Nora loves the snow. She thinks it is some pretty amazing stuff. We had to drive pretty carefully to work, but we made it safe and sound.
I love playing in the snow. There isn't anything like snow to make adults act like kids again! I remember building snow men and trying to build snow forts as a child. More recently I tried to build a little snow shelter for my dog.
Sky-dog loves the snow. She runs out and buries her head in it. She runs around with her face down in the snow like a doggie snow plow. She will get a load on her nose, toss it in the air and then try to catch it. She runs around like a maniac and tries to get us to throw snow balls at her. She is so much fun. Funny though, she didn't like the snow shelter I made for her a few years ago.
Doug and I had a nice relaxing holiday. He made chocolate chip cookies and for dinner he cooked a fabulous Prime Rib and we had a glass or two of red wine. Nora had some prime rib and mashed potatoes before going to bed.
Right now Northern Idaho is under a snow advisory. We are supposed to get another 2-3 inches of accumulated snow this morning. It looks like we have a chance of snow everyday this week until next Monday! Wow! I hope this moisture will help the farmers and I hope this storm continues on to Wyoming and drops tons of moisture in the mountains. They really need a good snow pack to feed the lakes and streams all summer and fall.
